Trekking in Racha

Largely unnoticed by tourists, Racha is a true gem of Caucasus. Untouched nature and picturesque landscapes will not disappoint your expectations in any way.

Day 1

The sightseeing tour of Tbilisi starts at Holy Trinity cathedral, one of the largest orthodox cathedrals in the world. Sameba (Holy Trinity cathedral) is a synthesis of traditional styles dominating the Georgian church architecture at various stages in history and has some Byzantine undertones. Continue to Metekhi church of Assumption, standing in one of the earliest inhabited areas on the city’s territory. Discover the history of this fascinating building, visit the monument of Vakhtang Gorgasali, the legendary founder of Tbilisi. Take cable car to Narikala Fortress to enjoy breathtaking panoramic view of the city. After the short break on the fortress walls, walk down to the district of Sulphur bathhouses and have a short walk in the streets of old city. Visit the only mosque in Tbilisi, visit Sioni Cathedral, Anchiskhati Basilica, and the clock tower of famous Rezo Gabriadze Puppet Theatre.

Day 2

Drive to Oni. On your way, visit Barakoni Church of the Mother of God, commonly known as Barakoni and Nikortsminda Cathedral, built in 1010-1014 during the reign of Bagrat III of Georgia. The Cathedral is on the Tentative List for status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once in Oni, discover the local Synagogue. Despite a post-Soviet tendency towards migration, Oni still retains a small number of Jewish families – remnants of once powerful and large historic Jewish community, Georgia’s third largest, after those of Tbilisi and Kutaisi. The Oni Synagogue was built in the 1880s by a Polish architect and the builders were Greek Jews from Thessaloniki.

Day 3

Start your trek at village Glola early in the morning. Ascend will take 1 or 2 days (depends on the experience and stamina of group members). You may take the same trek on your way back or descend by another route leading to village Shovi.

Hiking.

Day 5

Hiking. Return to Oni

Day 6

Return to Tbilisi.

 

Apine Lake Of Khelitsadi

Mystical and spectacular Truso Valley, is known for its mineral water springs, yellowish travertines, mineral lake with bubbles, villages on a very high altitude and nice people. Unfortunately, conflict between Ossetians and Georgians and border closure by Russian government made this gorge abandoned.

Day 1

Our driver and guide will pick you up at your hotel in Tbilisi. The route will take over the Georgian Military Highway up North towards the border with Russia.

 

Our first stop will be at old capital, – Mtskheta. One of the oldest cities in the world, Mtskheta is also considered holiest place for christians second only to Jerusalem. The reason for this is Mantle of Christ, buried here, in Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. A masterpiece of the Early Middle Ages, Svetitskhoveli is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is currently the second largest church building in Georgia, after the Holy Trinity Cathedral. On your way back to the vehicle do buy some Churchkhelas, – traditional Georgian treat, prepared with hazelnuts or walnuts dipped in grape juice.

 

Proceed to Jvari Church, a true architectural masterpiece of the early Medieval Period overlooking Mtskheta and the confluence of Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers from the top of the hill.

 

Continue to Ananuri complex, which is overlooking Jinvali reservoir. During the late Autumn and winter, level of water in reservoir is low and you can access the old bridge, usually covered by water rest of the year. As for the Ananuri, it was a castle and seat of the Eristavis (Dukes) of Aragvi, a feudal dynasty which ruled the area from the 13th century. The castle was the scene of numerous battles. Explore the church and the defencive building around it. Once you go back to the vehicle, continue to Stepantsminda.

 

We will then drive over the Cross pass and make a short stop at Soviet time “People’s Friendship” mountain view point overlooking a deep gorge of Caucasus mountain range.                                                                                     

 

In Stepantsminda, we will hike up to reach Gergeti Holy Trinity Church located, on altitude of 2170 m, and enjoy breathtaking views of Mt Kazbegi.

 

Overnight in Stepantsminda.

 

Day 2

Drive from your hotel early in the morning. Trek starts at Kvemo Okrokana village.You will climb higher and higher on a serpentine, nice views are guaranteed. You will be accompanied by experienced guide all the time. Trek will take around 3 days to finish. Trekking day.

 

Day 3

Trekking day.

 

Day 4

Trekking day. Return to Tbilisi.
